Project type: Rear Garden area – Design & Build

Location: Dulwich, London

Design brief:

Our clients are passionate gardeners, enjoy spending time in the garden being gardeners when they get time and using the outdoor space as much as possible in the summer months to relax, enjoy and entertain.

The garden provided a challenge of building a large retaining boundary wall on one side of the garden to effectively create a level rear garden area as the existing slope and levels were very awkward and difficult to maintain.

The retaining wall was designed to retain a height of 1.8m, a 1.8m fence structure was installed on top of the wall to create essential privacy from the public road and overlooking views.

Then within the garden, we installed an additional smaller retaining wall formed in sleepers to create a large level plateau area, from which we could create large and meandering lawn, planting beds around the existing trees with additional flowering evergreen & perennial shrubs, a new water feature together with a link to side to a seating area and utility area where the garden’s shed, storage and composting area is located.

Project Notes:

The entire project duration ran for 7 weeks during the winter months.

Our tree surgeon carried out a lot of work on the existing trees to clean up any dead, diseased and damaged growth and remove limbs that had become overgrown.

Meanwhile, the hardscape guys got to work to form the main structural walls, by week 4 the new level rear garden area was formed, all lighting cables and irrigation pipes were trenched into the ground ready for the final fix.

The remaining hard & soft landscaping was carried out, the 3 rock formation water feature was created, we installed Pop up sprinklers into the lawn, formed a new lawn, steel edged planting beds were created to create low maintenance mowing edges, finally the planting scheme, drip irrigation within the beds and the light fittings were installed.
