Project type: Rear Garden area – Design & Build

Location: Enfield, North London

Design brief:

Our young family clients had a tired and non- interesting small rear garden, no functional space and very overlooked from the surrounding neighbours and located in the hub of the hussle and bussle of a busy typical busy London surroundings.

Our clients wanted security, privacy, a place to enjoy the outdoor summer life and retreat from the busy world just outside the gate, an escape and a haven to relax, dine & entertain.

The first design challenge was to block out the outside world and solve the problematic level change from the garden levels to its lower public surroundings.

A robust structural retaining wall and fence system was created, using sleepers staked 1m high, reinforced with inground vertical posts 1m deep, then a 1.8m high closeboarded fence structure was fitted on top of the new walling to secure the garden, with a solid gate to the outside public alley.

Within the garden, we installed another small retaining wall clad with dark hardwood to form a feature wall and bench around the terrace, surfaced with light toned Resin Bound Gravels and Ivory coloured sandstone flags, encapsulated with a tall wall of Bamboo to create an intimate relaxation and dining space to eat, relax and entertain. The garden then steps up into a lush green lawn, a path is formed with sandstone steppers flush mounted into the lawn to form a vista to the rear and eventually turn to a well disguised and mush needed shed.

The entire garden is wrapped tall tree planting which increase the privacy screen height above the regulated 1.8m fence height, whilst creating beautiful foliage and flower, all underplanted with a wide variety of evergreen and perennial planting providing successional flowering and beauty throughout the seasons.

The garden is also fitted with a remote control lighting system and outdoor heating, the heaters warm the terrace areas when the sun goes down on those later summer evenings, the lights literally switch in the wow factor, uplighting the stunning bamboo walls of foliage and the beautiful tree canopies.
